Tribute

Battle, Joan (nee Standring)– In her 87th year, passed away peacefully in the early morning of Wednesday, October 23, 2019 with her family by her side at I.O.O.F Seniors Home in Barrie, Ontario. Beloved wife of almost 68 years of marriage to John James Battle. Loving mother of Paul Battle (Sharlie) of Alliston, Stephen Battle (Carmen) of Calgary, and Caroline Fair (Jeff) of Innisfil. Cherished and much loved ‘Nana’ and Grandmother to Melissa (Mike) of New Brunswick, Jonathan of Alberta, David (Samantha) of Horseshoe Valley, Stephen and Melody of Alberta, and Annika and Abigail of Innisfil. Dear great-grandmother of Bailey and Peyton of New Brunswick, Lucas and Mya of Horseshoe Valley and Karma of Alberta. Lovingly missed by her family Joan (Tony) Wallace, Phillip (Debbie) Standring, and Dawn (Ivan) Ella, Chris (Mandy) in England.  Joan will also remain in the hearts of Marilyn Clarke-Tankard and Cheryl Battle. Joan was predeceased by her parents Samuel and Nelly Standring, her dearest sister Clara (Bert), brothers George (Brenda) and Robert (Betty).

Joan was a devoted and loving wife to John. Joan and John were married December 22, 1951 before setting sail on the Queen Mary headed for New York. The two with only a travel trunk of belongings, traveled north arriving in Canada the day of King George’s death. From there Joan and John built their home in Toronto, Ontario. Joan and John had two sons and a daughter, Paul, Stephen and Caroline while in Toronto. In 1975, they moved north to Innisfil making many friends at the Stroud Curling club, Sandy Cove Acres and beyond.

Joan (mom) will be remembered and live forever in the hearts of her three children. Remembering her as a woman whose unconditional love, support, strength and patience shaped who they are today. Joan (mom) never spoke ill of anyone and taught her children this as well. She was strong and looked to the world and others with positivity.  Her sense of humour and wit lives on within them as well. Although there is a void now, unable to be ever filled again, their hearts are filled with the most precious memories and love a mother could give her children. Joan’s love will live on forever in her children.

Each year the house in Innisfil Hts and later on Trellis Lane was opened to family in England who would stay with Joan and John. Many fond memories were made playing dominoes, cribbage, bocce ball and sipping a cup of ‘brew’ and eating Joan’s most wonderful apple pie. Travelling to Collingwood and Muskoka, having regular Sunday brunches at the Nottawasaga Inn and in later years the Mandarin were some of Joan’s favourite places to go and be with her family abroad.  Regardless of the distance, Joan’s love for her family was always felt and remains with them today.

Joan, (Wife, Mom, Nana/Grandma, Great-Grandma, Auntie, and Friend) is incredibly missed and will forever live in the hearts of those who had the utmost privilege to know and love her. May her spirit and love carry on in Heaven as well.
